PRESS RELEASE

Topic: “Architectural Heritage as a parameter of sustainable development of the place. The case of Lesvos: Correct methods of its Preservation and Management”

The North Aegean Region – Antiregion of Culture in collaboration with the Cultural Association of Plomari “To Polion” are organizing a Conference on “Architectural Heritage as a parameter of sustainable development of the place. The case of Lesvos: Correct methods of its Conservation and Management”. We invite you to attend it on Saturday, May 6 at 11 am, in Mytilini in the room of the General Secretariat of the Aegean, Asia Minor 2.

The Architectural Heritage of Lesvos is expressed by the mansions and eclectic buildings of the urban areas, the folk houses, the rural houses and the dams of the rural settlements and the countryside – which reflect the timeless historical and socio-economic conditions of the island – in combination with the diverse and peculiar physical-geological environment. And since this architectural heritage is an irreplaceable expression of the identity and uniqueness of Lesbos, an invaluable testimony of the past and a multi-layered common good, we must with knowledge and methodical care develop methods of protection and maintenance of its historical buildings, so that it is not lost its excellent architectural physiognomy, which is its important and characteristic comparative advantage.

The aim of the Conference is to activate both the state and the local authorities as well as the residents, engineers and craftsmen in this direction, so that the historical buildings are repaired and strengthened with correct methods, contributing on the one hand to highlighting the rich Architectural Heritage of Lesbos on the other hand, in shielding and protecting it from the wear and tear of time, human interventions and natural disasters.

The day is kindly supported by the Secretary General of Aegean and Island Policy, the Greek Department of ICOMOS, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Ministry of of Newer Monuments, the Museum of Natural History of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, the TEE B.
