Bird Watching

The island of Lesvos has been promoted in recent years as one of the most popular destinations for bird watching in Europe for many reasons, such as its geographical location, its large size and its variety in natural landscapes that favor the presence of so many, different and rare bird species, offering the ideal setting for a stopover and reproduction. More than 300 species of migratory and endemic birds have been recorded in this region. As an indication, here are some of the birds with limited worldwide or European distribution: Kruper nuthatch (Sitta krueperi), cinereous bunting (Emberiza cineracea), Ruppell’s warbler (Sylvia rueppelli), Cretzschmar’s bunting (Emberiza caesia), Isabelline wheatear (Oenanthe isabellina), masked shrike (Lanius nubicus), Ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), flamingoes (Phoenicopterus) and many others. The months of the spring and the fall are ideal season for bird watching.
