There are special types of natural habitats and areas in Lesvos where particular exceptional extremely significant plant and animal species grow. Therefore it is crucial that these are areas to be protected on a European-wide level by inducting them into the national and European register of special areas for the preservation of Nature of the Natura 2000 Protection Network. The Natura 2000 network aims at securing the long-term preservation of the most valuable and most endangered species and habitats at a satisfactory level. In Lesvos there are three areas that have been demarcated for induction into the Natura 2000 network fulfilling the aforementioned criteria and encompassing the most significant ecological elements of our island.
