Fig Festival at Ippeios

The Fig Festival takes place annually in September at the village of Ippeios, a celebration of the fig and its history. The event program includes video presentations with a brief history of fig cultivation in this area and lectures by expert researchers on the properties and nutritional value of figs. The Cultural Association of Ippeios organizes dance performances along with exhibitions enabling visitors to discover and explore various fig varieties, sweets made of figs (“alevries”, “retseli”, “vrasma”, fig pies) and many other delicacies based on the fig. The visitors have the opportunity to view various fig production processes, such as desiccating, drying, salting and blanching. There are also exhibits with old pictures of fig harvesting and old recipes for sweets using figs.
