Antissa

Antissa is located in the western part of the island, 76 km from Mytilini, with a northward orientation towards the Aegean Sea and the Turkish shores, at an altitude of 276 m. This area exhibits immense interest as it was the site of the homonymous ancient city and one of the first Aeolian settlements on this island. Additionally, mythology has it that the lyre and the head of Orpheus (a murder victim of the Maenads) washed out on ancient Antissa shores. Today Antissa lives off livestock farming and tourism. Its healthcare center serves the surrounding municipality village including Eresos. It has both primary and secondary education facilities.
