The Agiasos Reading Room

The building complex of the “Anaptyxi” Reading Room in Agiasos is located in City Hall Square on the lower entrance into the village. Founded in 1894 during the Ottoman occupation, this Reading Room has a sizeable library with more than 25,000 volumes, a 300-seat cinema for theatrical, music and dance shows and a folklore museum. It also includes a very energetic club with 120 members, which undertakes the organization of lectures mainly about traditional dances, music, traditional instruments (mainly the santur) and these are open to people of all ages. The Agiasos Reading Room has been steadily offering its cultural activities promoting the rich Agiasos folklore tradition and bringing together all villagers regardless of age or occupation primarily through music and theater.
