The Gogos Mansion in Vatousa

Description

The Gogos Mansion is located in the center of the traditional settlement of Vatousa. It belonged to famous doctor Georgios Gogos and he was intended it to be his daughter’s dowry. A typical neoclassical architecture example of the end of the 19th century, this building was erected next to the Church of Panagia. The mansion was donated later on to the Community of Vatousa and renovated in the 1980s with the cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and the Prefecture of Lesvos. It has been operated ever since as a folklore museum. The Mansion’s collection includes: two libraries with a wide selection of books and treatises, both in Greek and other languages, agricultural tools, traditional costumes, photographs, household items and furniture. The ground floor is an exhibition area for periodic shows, specializing in topics drawn from the natural heritage and the folk culture of the wider vicinity.
