The Municipal Gallery of Mithymna

The Municipal Gallery of Mithymna opened in August 1981 on the initiative of then mayor Kostas Doukas, writer Nasos Theophilou and other artists. On opening day 77 works were donated by artists themselves and art collectors. These are important painting and sculpture works by the most significant Greek painters and sculptors of the post-WWII generation and international artists mainly from the 1960s. Today the Gallery fully operates and maintains a collection of more than 200 paintings made by Greek and international contemporary artists and it is growing constantly. The collection is housed in a landmark building built in the late 18^th century according to the traditional Lesvian residence style influenced by the Orient.
