The Vatera-Polichnitos Wetland

The Vatera-Polichnitos Wetland located on the southeastern side of Kalloni Bay is a special type of wetland, resplendent in beauty. More than one hundred species of birds have been recorded living here, species such as herons, European shags, flamingoes, glossy ibises, Eurasian curlews, white storks, common moortens, etc. are just some of the birds that a visitor may observe.

The flora in this wetland is really special for the Polichnitos vicinity. The wider area is characterized by extensive olive tree orchards and sparse presence of brush land made of kermes, gorses, terebinths, oaks and expanses with Calabria pines. At the estuaries of the Almyropotamos river there is a prevalence of water and wicker reeds.
