The Vranas Olive Press and Museum

This is one of the first steam-powered factories in Lesvos and the Aegean basin. It was built in 1887 by Nikolaos Vranas, Poetry Nobel laureate Odysseus Elytis’ grandfather, in the village of Papados in one of the most significant settlements on Lesvos and main town of Gera, an area with age-old traditions in olive oil production. This industrial landmark in Papados with its exceptional architectural value operated with no interruption for ninety years until the beginning of the 1970s, when it finally closed down and was left to decay thereafter.

The cultural organization Archipelagos acquired and treated the ruined Vranas Olive Press building complex as a unified monumental complex in the industrial and local history, deserving to be landscaped, restored and promoted. After its complete architectural and mechanical rehabilitation the old olive oil press was turned into an attractive museum lively and directly narrating its own story and the history of the land and its epoch.
