The Folklore Museum at Vatousa

Description

The Folklore Museum at Vatousa is housed in one of the most beautiful neoclassical mansions, namely the Gogos Mansion. It was built in 1890 by famous Doctor Gogos to be given as dowry for his daughter and was donated to the Community in the end of the 1960s. It was renovated in the 1980s with the cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and the Prefecture of Lesvos. It was opened in 1989 and has been operating as a cultural events center with various exhibitions and the Folklore Museum ever since. The exhibition is deployed in three units (the ground floor, basement and second floor), including items that document the peasant culture of this area. In particular, the collection includes two libraries with a wide selection of books and treatises, both Greek and international, agricultural tools, traditional costumes, especially women’s costumes documenting the dress trends of the urban classes in the beginning of the 19th century, photographs, household items and furniture. This building hosts periodical exhibitions on the ground floor focusing mainly on the natural heritage and the folk culture of this area.
