The Windmill at Perama Geras

Περιγραφή

The windmill at Perama Geras on Lesvos dates to the beginning of the 20th century. It was built just outside the settlement of Papados, right in front of the Sourlangas tannery. As it is located at the bay narrows it is subject to strong blasts from northerly and southerly winds. The construction method combines the local irregularly-shaped stones with compact bricks and Greek lime plaster (“kourasani”), a strong bonding agent. The mill is slightly conical and cylindrical in shape. Although the mill has ceased operations for many years now, it is a significant landmark and site for this area. In the past it served the tannery operations in the crushing of oak acorns. In 1997, the mill was registered as a historic landmark.
